Greg Wilson did a pretty good job with the disco at Bestival. The man’s a dinosaur in the scene, he’s been playing since the beginning of times (c. 1975) and he can remember the days when people didn’t know what a turntable was. Check it out here.

Klein & M.B.O. – Dirty Talk (Greg Wilson Edit)

The Dirty Projectors make absolutely incredible things with their voices, it’s all layers, loops and patterns, and seeing them live you you really get just how many perfectly pitched, slightly discordant elements are happening simultaneously to create all the intricate noisy harmonies.

This one’s my fave at the moment, and it’s cool enough that he can get away with singing the words “residential neighbourhood” like they’re the most emotionally loaded line he’s ever written.

Dirty Projectors – Remade Horizon

Things got nice and rowdy as we like them on Saturday night with L-Vis, Buraka, Major Lazer and Diplo.  The white man’s arse has been oppressed, sat on, and flattened out for centuries, and these guys are running a noisy revolution to get it live and shaking again.

Get some squidgy, sticky, fuzzy basslines and party on the ruins of house.

Hard House Banton – Sirens (Original Mix) [Insatiable]

Crookers ft MC Dandão – Soca Ali Baba [Man Recordings]

Lil Silva – Funky Pulse [DDJ's Productions]

your k funky hit (some nasty beats)

morning tape

You have to love Plastic People. It’s all about venues so dark it takes you five minutes of squinting to find your friends, even though they’re half the population in there.

Last night we went to Beyond, their UK Funky night. The lineup included brand new Hyperdub girl Cooly G, playing a nice blend of deep and dubstep,  followed by East London bad boy Marcus Nasty, big fish in the funky tank, leader of the Nasty Crew, ex-con, and a man with a notorious penchant for smacking fellow crew members. Basically, Nasty is n-a-s-t-y. But he grins a lot. Roska, Fingaprint, and MC Verstaile of Crazy Cousinz were also of the party.

UK funky is one of those mashup things – dubstep meets funky house meets grime meets thumping, foot-lifting afrobeat, soca beats, and tribal drums. R&B vocals are big too and we love them. Everybody needs to get a little bit tacky sometimes.

Here’s a few samples.

Cooly G – Narst

Crazy Cousinz – Funky Anthem (Instrumental Version)

D-Malice – Visions (Roska Remix)

Shystie – Pull It (Ill Blu Mix)
